Presentation and HPI--60 year old female with chronic left shoulder pain after a fall several years ago, that led to a shoulder dislocation. Pain is severe and constant, unrelieved by pain medications, and is worse when she tries to lift her arm to the side.

When x-rays (radiographs) do not answer the question, the next study may be ultrasound, CT or MR. If the question concerns fine detail in bone, CT is often best.

Outcome--The patient has a deformation of the humeral head, and if pain relief cannot be achieved with medication, a shoulder replacement may be needed.
